The need to control the traffic of private cars, primarily in urban areas, has pushed for the introduction of a series of policy measures meant to reduce the negative externalities associated with private car use. Among such policies, that of sharing mobility has attracted significant attention from policymakers, and car-sharing, in particular, has been widely introduced to reduce the size of car stocks. This chapter evaluates the literature on the effectiveness of car-sharing in reducing the number of new car registrations, with some empirical evidence from Italian cities finding a small reduction in new car sales, with an order of magnitude of 2 to 3%.

Abstract

The need to control the traffic of private cars, primarily in urban areas, has pushed for the introduction of a series of policy measures meant to reduce the negative externalities associated with private car use. Among such policies, that of sharing mobility has attracted significant attention from policymakers, and car-sharing, in particular, has been widely introduced to reduce the size of car stocks. This chapter evaluates the literature on the effectiveness of car-sharing in reducing the number of new car registrations, with some empirical evidence from Italian cities finding a small reduction in new car sales, with an order of magnitude of 2 to 3%.
