The systematic investigations carried out by the Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra (Vatican City) which, starting from 2016 take place in the underground settlements of the Lamapopoli cemetery complex in Canosa di Puglia (BT) allowed the discovery of new in situ inscriptions. This contribution focuses on brush inscriptions (tituli picti), highlighting the observation of executive techniques, formal and compositional aspects in relation to the contexts to which they belong. The testimonies examined, some still unpublished, were acquired during the most recent research (years 2017-2019) in the hypogea F and G; among these, an inscription from 362 AD which appears to be, at the time, the oldest dated epigraph of Christian patronage in the province Apulia et Calabria.

Abstract
The systematic investigations carried out by the Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra (Vatican City) which, starting from 2016 take place in the underground settlements of the Lamapopoli cemetery complex in Canosa di Puglia (BT) allowed the discovery of new in situ inscriptions. This contribution focuses on brush inscriptions (tituli picti), highlighting the observation of executive techniques, formal and compositional aspects in relation to the contexts to which they belong. The testimonies examined, some still unpublished, were acquired during the most recent research (years 2017-2019) in the hypogea F and G; among these, an inscription from 362 AD which appears to be, at the time, the oldest dated epigraph of Christian patronage in the province Apulia et Calabria.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
