This work aims at providing an overview of assessment of academic research. The author critically retraces the evolution of research assessment systems in Europe and Italy, focusing her attention on two key notions: the state of the art in research assessment within the field of human science (considering methodologies and best practices) and new perspectives offered by research assessment in order to improve quality in academic scientific outcomes. The heuristic potential of research assessment systems is also analysed in order to consider both the existing critical issues and the positive effects emerging from new strategic and organisational development solutions within the international university system.

Abstract
This work aims at providing an overview of assessment of academic research. The author critically retraces the evolution of research assessment systems in Europe and Italy, focusing her attention on two key notions: the state of the art in research assessment within the field of human science (considering methodologies and best practices) and new perspectives offered by research assessment in order to improve quality in academic scientific outcomes. The heuristic potential of research assessment systems is also analysed in order to consider both the existing critical issues and the positive effects emerging from new strategic and organisational development solutions within the international university system.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
