Att. 5, 2, 2 is the earliest source where the Greek στρατήγημα has the secondary meaning of ‘trick, device’. In the light of previous occurrences in Greek literature, and on the basis of other passages in Cicero and Horace’s scholiasts, it could be considered that in this context Cicero uses στρατήγημα in its meaning of ‘act of a general’.
