The historian and hagiographer Henri Quentin has developed an innovative theoretical method on philology. Challenged since his first presentation, the method he devised never established itself, but it could count on admirers, followers and epigones. The méthode was used under the supervision of the creator only in two cases: the edition of the Vulgata and the commented edition of the Martyrologium Hieronymianum. The aim of the research is to analyze the Quentin’s méthode from its formulation to the most recent findings. Of this almost secular time-frame, this contribution deals with the first part corresponding to the period from the birth of the ecdotic method to the publication of the Essais de critique textuelle.
