The paper analyzes the exegesis on Psalm 44 (45) given by Jerome in the letter 65 Hilberg to the virgin Principia. In it, Jerome deals with themes proposed by Origen and by other Greek and Latin authors, freely moulding them on the basis of his didactic, exegetic, spiritual exigencies in order to justify Principia’s, Marcella’s and Asella’s choice of virginity and sacred life. This exegesis is a true masterpiece, which shows at the same time rhetoric, hermeneutical, linguistic skills. Overall, it offers an exhaustive commentary on the Psalm and praises the mystic marriage between Christ and the nuns, who are compared to the Bride of the Song of the Songs.
