The omen of the ox. Fraud and deception in the foundation legend of Carthage · The contribution identifies, in the double omen of the caput equi and caput bovis, a Roman rereading of the foundation’s legend of Carthage. In particular, the rejection of the omen of the caput bovis would not be motivated only by fear of submission, which is represented by the ox. The simplicitas and unsuitability to fraus and dolus, attributed to this animal by literary tradition, are not fit for Punics, well known for their mastery of deceit, nor, in particular, for the queen and founder of Carthage.

Abstract

The omen of the ox. Fraud and deception in the foundation legend of Carthage · The contribution identifies, in the double omen of the caput equi and caput bovis, a Roman rereading of the foundation’s legend of Carthage. In particular, the rejection of the omen of the caput bovis would not be motivated only by fear of submission, which is represented by the ox. The simplicitas and unsuitability to fraus and dolus, attributed to this animal by literary tradition, are not fit for Punics, well known for their mastery of deceit, nor, in particular, for the queen and founder of Carthage.
