In the ancient city of Rome, luxury clothing is datable before the 3rd century BC, but its diffusion took place between the 2nd and the 1st century BC, pervading the Roman society. During the Republican age the control of fashion and clothes was a prerogative of the Senate, through the magistrates. In the imperial period, censor functions and legislative initiative in the field of luxury merged and were concentrated in the hands of the emperors.
