The paper has the aim to present a general framework of the churches in central Apulia during the Early Middle Ages, through the analysis both of archaeological evidences and of documentary sources. The main focus is to underline the importance of the architectural aspects and of the distribution of the churches within the territory, in order to verify the structuring of the ecclesiastical network in Bari’s area during the Byzantine period (9th-11th centuries) in relationship with the organization of rural settlements.
