The electroactivity of major Alternaria mycotoxins was explored in order to devise a liq. chromatog.-electrochem. detection method for the detn. of these toxic metabolites in fungal cultures and in naturally contaminated foods. Alternariol, alternariol Me ether, altertoxin I and altertoxin II were electroactive and could be detected at sub-nanogram levels. Advantages and limitations of dual electrode (screen mode) coulometric detection and single electrode amperometric detection are discussed. The feasibility of electrochem. detection in gradient-elution liq. chromatog. as well as its applicability to the anal. of contaminated foodstuffs is demonstrated.
