"Matera-Basilicata 2019, European Capital of Culture": this appointment in Southern Italy may represent an opportunity to spread the geological culture, especially to an untrained public. The idea is to suggest to local institutions to add geological information during tours devoted to other thematic itineraries (historical, literary, archeological...). As an exam-ple, this paper presents an itinerary that includes three localities in the province of Matera (Matera, Grassano, Aliano), linked to have been protagonists of Carlo Levi's political exile in the '30s and to represent three important elements that characterize the geology of Southern Italy: the Apulia Foreland, the Bradanic Trough, the Southern Apennines Chain. Carlo Levi, thanks to his paintings and his famous book "Christ stopped at Eboli", described these places during his exile, capturing not only the human, but also the historical and geological aspects. Part of these artistic works, thanks to the constitution of a Literary Park dedicated to Carlo Levi, can be used to guide us along this journey illustrating the geology with the eyes (the paintings) and especially with the words (the book) by Carlo Levi.
