Abstract

The wide use of loving nicknames, so typical between young lovers, often turns into a monotonous and mechanical use of epithets, as the relationship becomes formal and reaches a more mature sphere. The close observation of vocatives, which allows to capture the state of relationship, highlights the boredom and the repetitiveness of dynamics between husbands and wives in Plautus’ comedies. In the comedy Amphitruo, the introduction of a third foreign element in the couple breaks all the schemes, thus triggering off a variety in the use of vocatives, a confusion of names and an overturning of roles.
