Non formal education in the youth sector in Italy includes a diverse landscape of practices where pluralism often goes along a lack of clarification of objectives, methods and definitions of youth as a life stage and a social actor. By adopting a critical sociological perspective, the paper offers a theoretical contribution on the communicative and learning relation operating in youth work. This perspective looks specifically to the abilities to reflect on the own context by trying to identify those latent cultural drivers that affect the interpretation of reality, the production of meaning and the choice-making process. The paper draws from different disciplinary fields: the sociology of inter-generational relations and the reflexivity theory; the social pedagogy and the theory of educational accompaniment; the psychoanalytical theory on subjectivation process and educational relationship.
