In Aristophanes’ Plutus, produced in 388 B.C., the rôle and the mask of the character of Penía, the personification of poverty, have a significant importance. This paper offers a detailed analysis of v. 422 (text and interpretation), defending the text transmitted in Ravennas codex (Penia as a pale woman; in 423-424 she is likened to an Erinys); in particular, von Bamberg and Jackson’ emendations (printed by Wilson) are refused, and an un- known conjecture is published, found in a Blaydes edition of Plutus (at the University of Bari) containing marginal notes by an anonymous scholar (who knew and approved Jackson’ proposal too).

Abstract
In Aristophanes’ Plutus, produced in 388 B.C., the rôle and the mask of the character of Penía, the personification of poverty, have a significant importance. This paper offers a detailed analysis of v. 422 (text and interpretation), defending the text transmitted in Ravennas codex (Penia as a pale woman; in 423-424 she is likened to an Erinys); in particular, von Bamberg and Jackson’ emendations (printed by Wilson) are refused, and an un- known conjecture is published, found in a Blaydes edition of Plutus (at the University of Bari) containing marginal notes by an anonymous scholar (who knew and approved Jackson’ proposal too).File | Dimensione | Formato | |
