In Aristophanes’ Plutus, produced in 388 B.C., the rôle and the mask of the character of Penía, the personification of poverty, have a significant importance. This paper offers a detailed analysis of v. 422 (text and interpretation), defending the text transmitted in Ravennas codex (Penia as a pale woman; in 423-424 she is likened to an Erinys); in particular, von Bamberg and Jackson’ emendations (printed by Wilson) are refused, and an un- known conjecture is published, found in a Blaydes edition of Plutus (at the University of Bari) containing marginal notes by an anonymous scholar (who knew and approved Jackson’ proposal too).
