This chapter provides a historical overview of the place and role of translation in language learning and is subdivided in two sections: In the last two-hundred years, From the late 1920s to today. The chapter demonstrates that in the history of language learning in the Western world, different forms of translation have been advocated in theory as well as adopted in pedagogic practice. Throughout the centuries, language teaching has, therefore, contributed to forge a view of translation as a multifarious linguistic and cultural phenomenon.
