This paper focuses on Gilson's influence on modern medieval studies in the early 20th century. In particular, the research aims at showing the importance of "La liberté chez Descartes et la théologie" in the context of the interpretation of Descartes' thought and with reference to the debate that was provoked in France by its publication. The idea that governs the paper is that the genealogical research inaugurated by Gilson profoundly influenced Cartesian studies throughout the 20th century.
