Photius’ summary of Heliodorus’ Ethiopian Story in his Library (chapter 73) is generally regarded as inaccurate by modern scholars. Yet careful examination of the chapter shows that Photius knew the novel in detail. The text of chapter 73 also allows us to reconstruct the main features of Photius’ manuscript of Heliodorus: it was probably very close to the text seen in ms Vat. gr. 157 (11th cent.), which belonged to George Baiophoros (15th cent.).

Abstract

Photius’ summary of Heliodorus’ Ethiopian Story in his Library (chapter 73) is generally regarded as inaccurate by modern scholars. Yet careful examination of the chapter shows that Photius knew the novel in detail. The text of chapter 73 also allows us to reconstruct the main features of Photius’ manuscript of Heliodorus: it was probably very close to the text seen in ms Vat. gr. 157 (11th cent.), which belonged to George Baiophoros (15th cent.).
