In this essay I have showed that the recently renewed interest in women dramatists has somehow given a new impulse to the critical appreciation of Romantic theatre and drama. At the same time, I have noticed how another neglected area, contemporary literary criticism of drama, can give new impulse to the study of the theatre of the period. In particular, in his essays publishedin the Edinburgh Review, Francis Jeffrey emerges as one of the contemporary arbiters of British literary taste and as the inventor of a personal and innovative approach to dramatic criticism.

Abstract

In this essay I have showed that the recently renewed interest in women dramatists has somehow given a new impulse to the critical appreciation of Romantic theatre and drama. At the same time, I have noticed how another neglected area, contemporary literary criticism of drama, can give new impulse to the study of the theatre of the period. In particular, in his essays publishedin the Edinburgh Review, Francis Jeffrey emerges as one of the contemporary arbiters of British literary taste and as the inventor of a personal and innovative approach to dramatic criticism.
