From the double role to the multiple burden of women: career or carer? With the intensification of the aging population and the longer average span of life, Italian women, who were barely trying to bridge the gap that separates them from other European women in the workforce – having been unjustifiably absent for too long, given the constant decrease in fertility - are discovering that the responsibility of caring for an elderly relative can last more than a decade, thereby making it even more difficult to access or stay in the labor market. This study is an initial investigation on the current socio-de- mo-economic situation in Italy.

Abstract

From the double role to the multiple burden of women: career or carer? With the intensification of the aging population and the longer average span of life, Italian women, who were barely trying to bridge the gap that separates them from other European women in the workforce – having been unjustifiably absent for too long, given the constant decrease in fertility - are discovering that the responsibility of caring for an elderly relative can last more than a decade, thereby making it even more difficult to access or stay in the labor market. This study is an initial investigation on the current socio-de- mo-economic situation in Italy.
