Famiglie di Antico Regime. Studi recenti sulle aristocrazie meridionali

Il saggio propone, senza pretesa di esaustività, una rassegna di studi pubblicati nei primi lustri del secolo corrente. I lavori esaminati sono accomunati sia dallo sforzo di contenere il rischio della ripetitività, nato dal collocare le storie familiari entro paradigmi consolidati, sia dal tentativo di valorizzare la proiezione politica dei casati, vagliando ambiti di conoscenza e di discussione storiografica, se non del tutto nuovi, meno scandagliati. La selezione è stata consapevolmente limitata a ricerche relative a contesti geo-politici non troppo differenti per forme di organizzazione del potere e per opportunità consentite ai gruppi familiari. Sono stati pertanto considerati il Mezzogiorno insulare e peninsulare, nonché il versante meridionale dello Stato pontificio, in larga misura feudale e non di rado soggetto a baroni investiti di territori e giurisdizioni nel confinante Regno di Napoli. Gli studi qui analizzati sono stati suddivisi in tre gruppi che corrispondono ad altrettante partizioni del saggio. La prima e l’ultima trattano, rispettivamente, di casate d’antica o recente nobilitazione e di famiglie della nobiltà urbana, protagoniste di giochi di potere in provincia; quella intermedia di storie più direttamente influenzate dalla recente ripresa degli studi sulla feudalità, un tema per qualche tempo trascurato dalla storiografia.

The essay aims to without being exhaustive, review papers published in the early prestige of the current century. The studies have been analyzed in order to limit the risk of repetition, arising from placing family histories within well-established paradigms, and also they try to emphasize the political projection of caste, by looking at areas of knowledge and historiography, which have been, if not entirely new, less analyzed so far. The selection has been consciously limited to searches of geo-political contexts which are not too different in terms of forms of power organization and opportunities for family groups. Therefore, the insular and peninsular southern Italy, as well as the southern side of the papal state, largely feudal and rarely subject to barons invested in territories and jurisdictions in the neighbouring Kingdom of Naples have been considered. The studies here analyzed have been divided into three groups that correspond to the sections of this essay accordingly. The first and last chapters, respectively, cover the lineages of ancient or recent ennoblement and of urban nobility who are the protagonists of power games in the province. The intermediate chapter investigates stories more directly influenced by the recent resumption of studies on feudalism, a theme for some time neglected by historiography.
