The article’s purpose is to investigate the relationship between the Vertumnus characterization in Prop. 4,2 and the ovidian reworking in Met. 14. In the love story between Vertumnus and Pomona Ovid reduces the propertian god to an elegiac lover situated in a definite space and in a legendary time : no trace of spatial and temporal fluidity in Prop. 4,2. The ovidian Vertumnus is a dynamic god, expression of sentimental and ideological values compatible with Pomona’s agricultural Italic world.
