This paper aims to present a brief history of the different studies on the rupestrian habitat in Southern Italy spread during the late nineteenth century, and, in particular, in Puglia, retracing some main stages that coincide with some fundamental changes in historiographical trends. The interest of scholars, initially focused only on the pictorial evidence, has gradually extended on the themes of architecture of the churches in the caves, rupestrian habitat and, ultimately, to the landscape in which these settlements are inserted.
