During the Great War, school turned into a machine for patriotic support. After careful review, subjects changed proposing pedagogical programs connected with the theme of the war and discussions about currents events. The aim was let also the children understood what Homeland, war, and military heroism were; let them become familiar with the most tragic aspects of the war, such as routine violence. During Italian lessons, teachers read and give children to read schoolbooks replete with war education to support the Homeland, a children’s tailored narrative, newspaper articles on war and increasing patriotism during the war development. The teaching History program proposed additional study about the independence wars, the birth of the Kingdom of Italy and several “patriotic” lessons as “Enthusiasm of the Italians for the war”, “Italians emigrants get back to Homeland to fight the war” or “24th May 1945”.
