According to Freud's view in his essay Der Witz und seine Beziehung zum Umbewussten, this article refers to the ironic use of Jewish tradition in Zangwill's novel and to its intersections with other literary examples (picaresque novel, Sterne). In particular this article points out the relation between the main use of logical wits and the question of Jewish identity.
