This comparison of French proverbs containing the word chapeau with the word cappello in their Italian counterparts is part of a larger research project (Conenna & Vecchiato, 2014; 2015; in press), in which we analyzed the distribution of the word chapeau found in idioms in several grammatical categories, as well as proverbs (chapeau!; chapeau bas!; partir sur les chapeaux de roue; qui a bonne tête ne manque pas de chapeau). For this study, we identified and classified a hundred Italian proverbs and thirty French proverbs. Our purpose is to reflect, taking chapeau and cappello as our starting point, on the paremiological keywords, their variants and in particular on their symbolic potential.
