The article analyzes the section of Montaigne's Journal de voyage (1774) written in Italian and points out the possibility of frequent linguistic misunderstandings through the analysis of the interpretation and of the translation of the verb “straccinò”. The article also offers an insight into the books that Montaigne could have read in order to improve his Italian language. Montemerlo's Delle phrasi thoscane (1566) has several points in common with Montaigne's text that should be analyzed.
