Sources dating between the 3rd century BC and the age of Tiberius make it possible to trace back the social-historical developments in the history of a branch of a municipal gens by observing the changes of the status civitatis of its members. Starting from 338 BC the Campanian Magii were Roman municipal citizens, and, after, the Hannibalic war, they became peregrini having moved to Aeclanum. Finally, they obtained citizenship optimo iure by Sulla in 89 BC, and some of their members could enter the Roman Senate. They achieved this social advancement thanks to horizontal mobility and were able to harmonize thei Roman identity woth that of new community to which they became part: indicators of this happy mixture seem to be their knomledge of Roman models and institutions, bilingualism and devotion to hirpinian-lucan deities.

Abstract
Sources dating between the 3rd century BC and the age of Tiberius make it possible to trace back the social-historical developments in the history of a branch of a municipal gens by observing the changes of the status civitatis of its members. Starting from 338 BC the Campanian Magii were Roman municipal citizens, and, after, the Hannibalic war, they became peregrini having moved to Aeclanum. Finally, they obtained citizenship optimo iure by Sulla in 89 BC, and some of their members could enter the Roman Senate. They achieved this social advancement thanks to horizontal mobility and were able to harmonize thei Roman identity woth that of new community to which they became part: indicators of this happy mixture seem to be their knomledge of Roman models and institutions, bilingualism and devotion to hirpinian-lucan deities.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
