L'articolo propone una rilettura della complessa e ambigua relazione tra l'appartenenza del Regno Unito all'Unione europea e la divisione interna dei principali partiti politici, conservatori e laburisti, tra sostenitori e oppositori. Le fratture interne delle parti hanno influenzato, inevitabilmente, i negoziati politici dei governi britannici in relazione all'opt-out e il ruolo futuro che il Regno Unito avrebbe avuto nel processo di integrazione europea.

The article proposes a rereading of the complex and ambiguous relationship between the UK's membership of the European Union and the internal division of the main political, conservative and Labor parties, between supporters and opponents. The internal fractures of the parties inevitably influenced the political negotiations of the British governments in relation to the opt-out and the future role that the United Kingdom would have had in the European integration process.
