The aimofthispaperhasbeentheassessmentoftheavailableresidualbiomass,particularlylig- nocellulosic, intheItalianterritory,toevaluatethepotentialforbioenergy,particularlyforelectricityand heat generation.ThegreenhousegassavingsaccordingtotheEuropeantargetandindicatorshavebeen estimated onthenationalscale.Particularly,thetotal final energywhichcouldbegeneratedfrom 22,208,455 t/yofresidualbiomassassessedinItaly,isequalto4.57Mtoe,nearly2.7%ofthegrossItalian energy consumptionin2013andthetotalsavingsofGHGemissionscomingfromthisbioenergygen- eration, arecloseto52MtCO2eq fortheentireItalianterritoryperyear.Theconclusionsunderlinethat an appropriatebioenergypolicycanhelpdecarbonisetheeconomy,enhancethereliabilityoftheenergy supply andadditionallyitcanrevitaliseruralareas.
