The transport of Cs+ ions in a flow of deuterium is studied by numerical simulation in the context of Cs seeding of negative ion sources for neutral beam injection (NBI). The model used is based on a calculation of the flow of deuterium molecules followed by the calculation of Cs+ ion transport in the established flow: both calculations are based on Monte Carlo methods. The physical hypotheses and approximations of the model are discussed in detail. A set of two-dimensional simulations is performed where Cs+ comes from a point source representing the Cs oven. The effect of the gas flow on the ion distribution, velocity field and flow through surfaces is shown. It is also found that, in spite of the high mass ratio and the low pressure in the expansion chamber, simplified descriptions of the neutral gas flow are inadequate.
