The theme of the “reditus in unum” is the focal point in which converge John Scottus Eriugena's philosophical and theological speculations. Of this subject is proposed a new arrangement on the basis of the final summary of Book V of the Periphyseon: “Triplex modus theoriae” is in effect the hermeneutical key given by Eriugena himself to study the doctrine of the “reditus” which, beyond any exegetical ambiguity introduced by the modern scholarship, reveals itself to be effectively endowed with a profound unity, centered on the return of man to God.

Abstract

The theme of the “reditus in unum” is the focal point in which converge John Scottus Eriugena's philosophical and theological speculations. Of this subject is proposed a new arrangement on the basis of the final summary of Book V of the Periphyseon: “Triplex modus theoriae” is in effect the hermeneutical key given by Eriugena himself to study the doctrine of the “reditus” which, beyond any exegetical ambiguity introduced by the modern scholarship, reveals itself to be effectively endowed with a profound unity, centered on the return of man to God.
