This paper aims to analyze a neglected page from Byzantine scholarship of the Komnenian period. Gregory Pardos, the metropolitan of Corinth, included in his commentary on Ps.-Hermogenes’ rhetorical treatise De methodo gravitatis a brief but detailed mention of the Ephesiaca of Xenophon of Ephesus. The value of this information, hitherto not fully appreciated, is here examined within the reception of Xenophon’s novel.
