We introduce a class of methods of order two that exactly preserve the Hamiltonian function of separable Hamiltonian systems, in the case where such function is a polynomial. Although each method is a symmetric Runge--Kutta formula involving a number of internal stages, the computational cost is comparable to that of the trapezoidal method. Some numerical results are also presented.
