Methyl bromide, the main agricultural fumigant, has been used for several decades to control insects, nematodes, pathogens, and weeds. Methyl bromide is being phased out internationally under the Montreal Protocol due to its ozone depleting effects and this ban has accelerated the research for alternatives. This research has taken into account the technical and economic limitations of replacing such a broad spectrum pesticide as methyl bromide. Now there are different alternatives (physical treatments, chemicals, biological agents etc.) to substitute methyl bromide in defence of cultivations. This paper reviews the world production and uses of methyl bromide and it focuses on those biological agents which appear to be, in the short and medium term, the more promising alternatives from an environmental point of view.
