In the last years the intensive pig-farming has increased in the Southern Italian regions. The constructive and plant engineering solutions developed for the intensive pig-farming of Central-Northern Italy might be sometimes unsuitable in a different environment. As a consequence the farmers have requested new solutions in order to obtain the comfort conditions for the animals and for the workers in the southern climatic and territorial environment. The present paper describes the principal constructive characteristics of the swine buildings for intensive farming in Puglia, Basilicata, Campania and Calabria pointing out the cleaning, removal, storage, treatment and disposal systems of animal wastes. For this reason technical inspections were executed in the typical swine farms of these geographical areas to analyse the constructive solutions used. On the basis of the collected information a critical analysis was developed in order to propose solutions to the problems caused by unsuitable planning and plant engineering choices.
