This is the first of a series of reflections on the management of European Mediterranean forests, based on harvest planning. During the second half of the last century, harvest planning underwent a development process that was both innovative and complex, involving all of its component parts, i.e. doctrine, procedures and techniques. This occurred as a result of the forest losing production value, mainly as regards timber, while at the same time it acquired other values, such as improvements to plant landscapes and to the biodiversity of the systems to which forests belong. After outlining the above issues, which are dealt with in papers due to be published soon, this study goes on to look into the meaning of terms such as assestamento, aménagement and ordenación and their derivative forms in the languages of European countries where harvest planning has been most widely applied
