A small dossier of Greek and Latin texts testifies the active role of women in three types of military contexts: a) the intervention in urban guerrilla contexts, where women (alone or with other people deemed “fragile”) strike enemies by throwing stones from the roofs of their houses; b) the use of women’ s hair to replace the ropes of war machines or ships; c) the direct intervention in the conflict. In this case, these are exceptional and isolated interventions, the main purpose of which is to restore the status quo ante.

Abstract

A small dossier of Greek and Latin texts testifies the active role of women in three types of military contexts: a) the intervention in urban guerrilla contexts, where women (alone or with other people deemed “fragile”) strike enemies by throwing stones from the roofs of their houses; b) the use of women’ s hair to replace the ropes of war machines or ships; c) the direct intervention in the conflict. In this case, these are exceptional and isolated interventions, the main purpose of which is to restore the status quo ante.
