This article analyses Margaret Cohen's theses on novels written by women in the first half of the nineteenth century. In her book The Sentimental Education of the Novel, Cohen describes the main features of the sentimental novel at the beginning of the century and shows how, from 1830 onwards, a new women's novel emerged, which she calls the « sentimental social novel ». Her work adopts two perspectives: one historiographical, which is always appreciable; the other, ideological and feminist, which is not always convincing in its claim to challenge the realism of Stendhal and Balzac.

Dans l’article on analyse les thèses de Margaret Cohen sur les romans écrits par des femmes dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle. Dans son livre L’Éducation sentimentale du roman, Cohen décrit les principales caractéristiques du roman sentimental du début du siècle pour montrer comment, à partir de 1830, est apparu un nouveau roman féminin, auquel elle donne le nom de « roman sentimental social ». Son travail adopte deux perspectives : l'une historiographique, toujours appréciable ; l'autre, idéologique et féministe, qui ne convainc pas toujours, dans sa prétention à contester le réalisme de Stendhal et de Balzac.
