The paper analyses the relationship of integration (not of opposition) between plain landscape and hilly territory in the late antique and early medieval Apulia. The phenomenon of castling on Daunian Apennine, Gargano promontory and Murge plateau is viewed in different morphologies during Early Middle Age: the use of ancient Roman cities, the creation of new fortified small towns, the settlement in rock caves, the protection of rural sites, then the formation of castra.
