Rome and Bucharest in the mid-1930s: politics, arms and diplomacy in italians documents

The Balkan Pact and that of the Little Entente, as well as the sincere adhesion to the League of Nations, were the cornerstones of Romanian policy between the two wars. Italy's plan to pronounce a revisionist Danubian-Balkan policy, necessarily having to rely on an agreement with Rome and Budapest, inevitably led to conflicts between Italy and Romania. This did not prevent Bucharest from exercising, on several occasions, an interest in Italian military supplies. The Italo-Ethiopian conflict seriously complicated relations between Italy and Romania. Bucharest's policy in favor of sanctions and principles of the League of Nations Covenant led Italy and Romania to antithetical positions. The removal of Titulescu, who had also sought an agreement with Rome, from the Romanian government certainly contributed to the principle of more extended bilateral relations, although German influence in the area began to become competitive and, in the end, prevalent.
