First, the essay discusses the most recurrent traits of the mother-daughter relationship of Irène Némirovsky’s novels, thus the “obsessive metaphors”, according to Charles Mauron’s expression, occurring in the analyzed novels are shown. The article is focused on the novels related to the relationship between the author and her mother: in those novels the mother-daughter relationship is really conflictual and sometimes it ends tragically. In novels like Le Bal, L’Ennemie, Jézabel, we can find adolescents who are becoming women and who come into conflict with their mothers, egoistic women that consider their daughters' growing up as a sign of ageing as well as a danger for their place in society. The daughters hate their mothers, but their behavior actually shows their need of love.
