During the second half of the twentieth century William Shakespeare’s plays are widely translated into Italian and performed in Italian theatres. This paper focuses on the translation into seventeenth-century Neapolitan language of The Tempest made by Eduardo De Filippo in 1983 (for the Einaudi’s series Scrittori tradotti da scrittori – Writers translated by writers), analyzing the reasons and the steps that led to the passage of Shakespeare’s masterpiece from the English tradition to that of Naples.
