The identification of the prosodic indices that contribute to the segmentation of speech in tonasl units is a problem that continues to arouse much interest in feeding.. This issue is important not only for its theoretical implications but also in the technological research. In this study the phonetic, indeces responsible to the perception of prosodic markers are investigated both in production and in perception. The material investigated consists of pieces of monologic speech produced by speakers from Calabria. Results show that the acoustic realization of a prosodic boundary is to be ascribed to the simultaneous activation of more factors; in many cases, the temporal variations appear dominant, being detectable even in the absence of relevant melodic movements. The perceptual judgements obtained for the same material by a group of listeners coincide only in part with the data on the acoustic production.
