The book explores the relationship between Jews and Christians between 6th and 7th Centuries, by means of the analysis of some texts of the Eastern area written in this period of time, in particular the “Dialogue of the Jews Papiscus and Philo with a monk”, the “Trophies of Damascus”, the “Quaestio 137 ad Antiochum Ducem”. A critical edition of the “Dialogue of the Jews Papiscus and Philo with a monk” (by C. Schiano), a translation and a commentary (by I. Aulisa) are presented in the book. The need for a new edition of this text is due to two different reasons: first of all, the old McGiffert edition, compromised by questionable editorial choices and by an unsatisfactory recensio (1889), is actually recognized as unreliable; in a second place, it is possible to detect numerous convergences with other contemporary texts (CPG 7797, 7772, 7795, 7815). These convergences are of a different level: on the one hand there are similarities in the topics or in the way of using Scriptures; on the other hand, in wide parts of the analyzed texts there are identical passages, which match each other ad verbum. The analysis showed that the anti-Jewish polemic in these texts is intertwined with the controversy concerning the worship of images, which were involved in both Jews and Christians. This controversy picks up themes and problems from the Bizantyne anti-Jewish polemic of the 7th and 8th Centuries, which reflects issues related to the ancient anti-Jewish literature, namely its relationship with the religious, social and political reality.
