The voluntary recruitment didn’t completely replace the compulsory one with the age of Augustus, but the to forms coexisted. In this paper we examine the extraordinaries recruitments which involve slaves and liberti from the republican age (the first news of this practice date from III century B.C), but with attention on Augustus period. The enphasis is on the recruitment necessary after Teutoburg’s defeat: political strategy and militaries necessities are considered from Augustus to solve the problem of the loss of Varo's three legions. On this basis we can do some observations about the recruitment in the imperial age.
