This essay investigates the reception of Karel Reisz’s film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning in Italy both at the moment of its release in 1960 and in most recent times, approaching the text through the theoretical frame offered by Peeter Torop’s semiotics and translation theory. Reisz’s film – which represents one of the best examples of the British New Wave – and which is itself a cinematographic translation and adaptation of the 1958 cult novel of the same title by Alan Sillitoe (which focuses on a Northern working class hero) is analyzed making reference to the dubbed Italian version and to the more recent reception of both novel and film in Italy through the works of The Smiths and The Arctic Monkeys, whose musical works stand as examples of metatextual translation of Reisz’s movie.
