Using electron microscopy, the setiform sensilla on the prodorsal shield in a phoretomorphic female of Pediculaster mesembrinae (Canestrini) (Pygmephoroidea, Siteroptidae) are described and illustrated. The simple setae (first and second pair of vertical setae - v1, v2, second pair of scapular setae - sc2) and the trichobothrium (first pair of scapular setae - sc1) have a solid shaft and smooth surface; their dendrites have tubular bodies connected to their shaft bases. According to their ultrastructural details, they can be classified as aporous sensilla: the simple setae are tactile receptors while the trichobothrium is assumed to be involved in vibration perception. Morphological differences with caeculid and oribatid trichobothria are pointed out.
