Occupational diseases and asbestos: the case of Fibronit (Bari) Is now acquired that the occupational and environmental exposure of the human organism to asbestos dust can be a potential risk to the health of the population raising a number of diseases characterized by a long latency period between the start of exposure and the appearance of the disease. This risk is particularly high in those areas affected by the presence of asbestos industries: a case in point is the establishment former Fibronit of Bari, working for several decades in the manufacture of asbestos cement in a densely populated urban area and abandoned in 1985, which has been termed 'death factory' for the large number of workers and local residents become ill and later died especially for pleural mesothelioma. The objective of this research is to assess whether in fact the risk of contracting diseases caused from asbestos is higher among workers and residents in the vicinity of the industrial settlement and highlight the efforts made by the municipality to ensure the redevelopment, in accordance with the DM 468/2001, which recognized that one of the sites of national interest to clean up is the area of former Fibronit, of the latter.
