Abstract

The Riunione Adriatica di Sicurtà, established in 1838, grew during the entire Habsburg Empire period becoming a truly international company in the insurance and reassurance field at the eve of the First World War. Historical and political transformations, cultural and economic inheritance, cosmopolitan and laissez-faire mark are all features which may be found not only in the company but also in the figure of one of its protagonists: Arnoldo Frigessi di Rattalma. Born in Trieste in 1881, he led the company for the entire first half of the Twentieth Century giving it a mark of modernity. Since its establishment, Ras has crossed decisive phases of Italian history: the passage from the Austrian government to the Italian one, the Fascist period, the racial persecution, the Second World War and the economic and political uncertainty which it led to. Exciting phases of development alternated with moments of difficulty, moments which gave relief to Mr. Frigessi, qualities as man and as manager, who manages to overcome all problems keeping the Companies’ independence confronted with the Fascist dirigisme and the charges of collaborationism levelled by the Allied Forces. The book tells this story and much more: Arnoldo Frigessi di Rattalma dies in 1950 while working at the Company’s reinforcement, following its large cutback due to the geopolitical effects of the Second World War. Indeed the division of Europe in two separate blocks had taken the east European markets away form Ras; markets in which the Company had put its roots.
