Health care workers are at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). The analysis of injuries involving a potential risks from biological agents is useful to take preventive measures to protect the exposed workers. This paper is a preliminary evaluation of the incidence of injuries with biological risk in health care workers of the Rimini Health Local Unit over a 5-year period (2001-2005). The annual incidence is greater among younger health workers and with less experience. Surgical and emergency areas account for the highest annual incidence. Further information will be gathered from the stratification of the sample study according to job task classification and the analysis of causes and circumstances of events. The results will be the basis for carrying out an integrated strategy of prevention of injuries with biological risk.
